And so here we are with the last small pleasures post of 2020. I’m on holiday, which is a small pleasure in itself, and am making the most of it. It is so nice to be able to relax and just enjoy a few simple things.
Anyway, first up, on Friday we went to Zealandia eco-sanctuary for a good breath of fresh air, a walk and to spot tuatara. Below are two of the half dozen we managed to spot. You can read about the tuatara here. We were lucky to see one of the takahē, a flightless bird indigenous to New Zealand. Once thought to be extinct, they were rediscovered in 1948, and are still a threatened species (there were 347 in 2017). Zealandia featured in Time magazine’s World’s Greatest Places – that is two places in Wellington this year! We go a couple of times a year, and always enjoy our walk around.
On Saturday afternoon, we took a walk in the sunshine through the Botanic Gardens, where everything was looking lovely, including this cactus covered with yellow flowers. See Saturday’s post for a picture of one of the pohutukawa trees. We then met friends from Glasgow, who were in the country, for dinner. That was a real small pleasure.
Sunday was one of those little perfect days, with a little bit of gardening, chutney making, reading and cooking. The roast nectarine and red capsicum chutney was a great way to use this season’s stone fruit and give the tastes of summer well into winter. The recipe I used comes from Annabelle Langbein’s A Free Range Life.
Days are now filled with lots of small pleasures – so hope yours are too.
