Perfect day

I firmly believe that as we get older, instead of forgetting our birthdays, we should continue to celebrate.  No longer, perhaps, with jelly and ice-cream or down the pub until closing time, but by taking a day off work, enjoying some good food, and generally taking time off to enjoy life.

My birthday was this week, and started on Sunday with prosecco at Ombra on Wellington’s Cuba Street.  It is such a nice place to stop for a pre dinner drink, and they even serve you with a little bite of something to whet the appetite.  We ate dinner at Logan Brown, a real Wellington institution, and a well known landmark on Cuba Street with its bright red door.  We opted for the prix fixe menu, with wine matches for each course.  I really enjoyed my oka (Samoan ceviche), served with coconut and lime and taro and kawakawa crisps to start with – just such a perfect combination of flavours.  I had a good risotto for my main course, and ended with a crème caramel, topped with honey-poached tamarillo, granola and manuka honey.  It was an excellent meal.

The actual day began with a superb surprise present from my dear husband which you can see below.  I am still glowing with happiness.

After a lazy morning, and breakfast of smoked salmon, I wandered into town to meet Karl for lunch at Pickle and Pie, buy a dress (present to myself) from KILT, browse in Arty Bees second hand book shop, pick up dinner at Moore Wilson’s and treat myself to a piece of cake at Poquito.
