A flower that was in bud only yesterday has suddenly blossomed

I love buying flowers, though am a hopeless at arranging them.  They bring a lightness and brightness to a room and lift the spirits on a dull day.  I picked up these poppies the other day, and have loved seeing them go from bud to bloom.

A poppy in bloom

The title comes from the quote below from Colette. Things didn’t collapse at the sight of these poppies, but I know exactly what she means.

“It’s so curious: one can resist tears and ‘behave’ very well in the hardest hours of grief. But then someone makes you a friendly sign behind a window, or one notices that a flower that was in bud only yesterday has suddenly blossomed, or a letter slips from a drawer… and everything collapses. ”
