Watching, listening, reading: May

We are almost at the end of May…at least this is the last weekend in May, and as I am off up to Auckland for a couple of days next week and busy most days, I thought I would be a little early with a round up of this month’s media consumption.

I asked my husband what we had been watching this month, and neither of us could really think of anything except the last episodes of Designated Survivor, which got quite exciting, and the brilliant if disturbing documentary series The Keepersabout the unsolved murder of a nun in Baltimore.  It is really worth watching, but not comfortable viewing.

On a lighter note there’s been Veep and Silicon Valley, but I have yet to find a good replacement for Gilmore Girls.  Suggestions welcome.

Over in podcast land, I’m still loving The Moth, A Taste of the Past and Radio Cherry Bombe, along with Friday Night Comedy from BBC Radio 4 (The News Quiz at the moment) and sampling things in the BBC’s Comedy of the Week.  Like many thousands of others, I’ve subscribed to At Home With... the new podcast series from Lily Pebbles and Anna Gardner (aka The Anna Edit).  It’s chatty and frothy, and just the thing after a day at work.

As to music….in all honesty nothing jumps out at me.  I really need to pay attention and make notes!

Reading and listening

This has been a very lean month as far as reading goes.  I just never seem to have the time, except when I am on a flight somewhere.  I usually fall asleep after two pages when reading in bed, and am always pottering about at weekends.  Anyway, I loved re-reading Barbara Pym’s Excellent Women, and Donna Leon’s ‘The Waters of Eternal Youth’ got me through a trip to Hamilton.  There were new editions of Cuisine and Dish, and I bought but have yet to look at Breathe, which I liked because of its cover as much as anything.

Let’s hope I can find some time in June to read…see some of what is lying waiting for me to pick up in the picture at the top of the post.  And on that note….maybe time to make some tea and pick up a book?

You can find Thistles and Kiwis on Facebook, and also on Instagram @blof678.  As for Twitter….am totally inactive these days.  If you want to get in touch, email me on
