Tastings on a Thursday: Wellington on a Plate part 3

Every now and again after Thursday night Pilates, I meet my husband for dinner. With Wellington on a Plate on right now, it made perfect sense to try something out this week.  When we came to Wellington four years ago (really that long ago?) for my husband’s job interview, we went to Olive on Cuba Street for an excellent dinner one night.  For some unknown reason, we haven’t been back there, so decided that this was the perfect occasion to enjoy dinner there again.

Olive was offering both a Burger Wellington option and a two or three course dinner menu.  Burger Wellington this year is offering 116 burger options (!) all paired with three of Garage Project‘s beers. The Burger Wellington at Olive was a “Randwick Meats housemade beef patty with Zany Zeus smoked brinza, Haewai Meadery honey mead and plum ketchup, and Scotty’s Meats bacon in an Arobake pain de mie bun, with pork crackling with a Garage Project beer match Hakituri.”  My husband opted for this and gave it 9/10. Note: if you wanted chips, you had to order them separately.

I decided on the two course dinner option.  The starter looked excellent (The Nut Store cashew vegan ‘mozzarella’ with Cuba Fruit Mart broccolini and artichoke pesto), but decided to go for main + desert and share the latter with my hungry husband.  I chose Parkvale Mushroom pie with pine nut gremolata and Cuba Fruit Mart cauliflower demi glace.  Gosh – this was a feast for mushroom lovers like myself. The pie was a thin crust of the flakiest pastry, topped with mushrooms and so many flavours – there was mustard, there was spinach, there was….well, let’s just say, a lot to enjoy.  The cauliflower was prepared and cooked to perfection.

The desert was a Whittaker’s chocolate reverse fondue.  A reverse fondue?  The waitress poured the dark, bitter chocolate sauce over the plate after introducing us to the plate before us.  There was caramelised banana, a coconut cake, a little spun candyfloss, a marshmallow that was nothing like the ones you buy and the most amazing dehydrated brownie, soft, chewy and chocolatey.

Verdict: excellent burger, excellent mushroom dish, very rich desert for chocolate lovers.  Highly recommended.
