If we were having coffee …or even a cup of tea, we would naturally talk about our recent trip to Sweden, Denmark and Scotland. I would tell you of the things that were different and of the things that were the same since my last visit, 2 years ago. It was strange to see a wire fence separating both sides of the train track between Denmark and Sweden and having our passports checked as we left the airport and as we arrived in Sweden at Hyllie. The controls introduced to stem the flow of migrants means a longer journey with interruptions instead of an easy commuter line between the two countries. In Copenhagen, there were more police controls around the synagogue. In the UK the referendum about the future of the country in the EU left an uncertainty. I would talk to you about how my home country, Scotland, voted to remain in the EU, unlike most of the rest of the UK, and how I fully expect another referendum on independence in the near future.
Border crossing, Hyllie
Yet many things were the same…conversations with friends, picked up from where we left off two years ago, favourite places and views, the smell of cinnamon buns in Sweden, the taste of salty liquorice and the haar (sea fog) that hits the east coast of Scotland.

If we were having a coffee… or even a cup of tea, I would tell you about my birthday, how it was low key but lovely, how we had some sparkling wine from Quartz Reef, and dinner at our local Italian restaurant.
A glass of fizz
Pappardelle alla Pescatora – look at that green lipped mussel at the front
If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea I would tell you that I won a $10 voucher for a pizza lunch place near work in a quiz on Thursday and a $20 cinema voucher on Friday, both at events as part of Māori Language Week at work. As a result of this good fortune, I have bought a lotto ticket for this Saturday’s draw which has a top prize of $40 million. Who knows?
If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea we would talk about the news…about the shootings in Dallas, about the mess in British politics, about the Australian elections…but also about the Icelandic football team doing so well in Euro 2016 (European Cup), Andy Murray reaching the semi-final of Wimbledon and that the Spice Girls released their first single 20 years ago.
If we were having coffee…or even a cup of tea…I would say how about a glass of wine, instead?
Cheers! Kia ora! Skål!
