6 things: this week in Wellington

I have absolutely no idea where this week has gone. Here we are at Friday again with the weekend ahead.  As I know I won’t get a chance to blog again until Monday, here’s a random 6 things post until then.

1) The flag debate.

Some of you may have seen that New Zealand is considering a new flag.  You can see some of the designs here.  A panel has announced a long list of 40 designs, and these will then be whittled down to 4 in September which will go forward to a referendum.  As it says here, there are 22 flags with Southern Crosses, 19 sport koru (a spiral shape based on the shape of an unfurling fern frond which symbolizes new life and growth) and 11 silver ferns, with only two without any of the above. Personally, I don’t think any of the new designs are that great.  We get to vote, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

2)  Weather

It’s the end of winter, spring approaches, so we are having very mixed days. You can tell it has been a colder winter than last year as some flowers are a week or so behind from this time last August.

3. End of an era

I’m not sure if I have mentioned it before, but the iconic Wellington department store, Kirkcaldie and Stains, is closing in February.  It is the oldest shop in New Zealand still trading under its original name, opening in 1863.  The site will reopen as the first New Zealand store of the Australian chain David Jones. Their last winter sale is on right now.

4.  Food etc

Those regular readers may have noticed a distinct lack of cooking posts in recent weeks.  Truth be told, what with one thing and another, I haven’t had either time or inclination to do much in the way of new baking or cooking.  My diet has been all messed up too – even had pizza twice this week which is a far from normal occurence.  Exercise is reduced to Pilates twice a week, partly due to my frozen shoulder, so have made a resolution to get back on track come Monday….oh wait….Wellington on a Plate is on and have a full diary of interesting things coming up…

5.  Social media

I try to read fellow bloggers each day, but don’t always succeed.  A current big favourite is Food, Booze and Reviews.  I couldn’t agree more with his observation of eating the food we have before buying more.  Bunny Eats Designs has also had a great series of interviews Tasty Questions recently that I have enjoyed reading.

And I am still enjoying the minutiae of daily life over on the Where You At? Facebook closed group.  It is just wonderful.

6.  Friday

On a Monday morning, what beats the thought of Friday? Well, at least for those of us who work to live.  Next week, is all about life…
